The Council of Governors has postponed the 7th Annual Devolution conference that was set to take place at Makueni County.

In a statement by the county chiefs on Thursday, August 19, the governors said they arrived at the decision following a review of Covid-19 maintenance measures issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday.

“The steering committee of the 7 th and final Annual Devolution Conference hereby notifies members of the public on the inevitable postponement of the Devolution conference. This is premised on the Presidential directive suspending all gatherings and in-person meetings,” Embu governor Martin Wambora who is the Council of Governors chair stated.

The announcement by the governors comes after President Uhuru banned all forms of gathering in his state of the nation address on Covid-19 containment measures that saw the extension of the 4am to 10pm nationwide curfew for a further 60 days.

The Annual Devolution conference was supposed to begin on Monday, August 23 and end on Thursday, August 26 at Makueni Boys High School.

Governor Wambora who is the councils chair stated that new dates of the conference will be announced in the coming days.

On Wednesday, August 18, President Uhuru instructed that the 10:00pm to 4:00am curfew be extended for 60 more days.

On the same note, the head of state lifted the differentiated curfew hours and specific restrictions imposed on Lake region counties that had been labelled as Covid-19 hotspots.

The counties included Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet and Trans Nzoia.

President Uhuru also ordered that all physical or in-person public gatherings and meetings to remain suspended with immediate effect for the next 60 days.

"Political rallies and campaign meetings for impending by-elections are hereby suspended with immediate effect for a period of 60 days," President Uhuru ordered.
