Detectives grill Senator Sakaja for hours over degree fraud claims
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was yesterday grilled for hours over claims that his degree certificate could have been forged.
The Senator arrived at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters at around 3.40 pm and only left well after 8 pm.
Sakaja was also expected to appear before the Commission for University Education (CUE) to provide further proof that his certificate was genuine but he ignored the session, saying he was not officially invited.
“I read it in the media. I can’t go there without an official invitation,” he said.
The senator was expected at the DCI headquarters at 2 pm but he went there almost two hours later.
He had, however, requested the detectives to give him some time as he was held in a meeting in Karen. He later went, accompanied by his running mate James Muchiri.
However, Machakos gubernatorial Wiper candidate Wavinya Ndeti and Meru UDA gubernatorial candidate Mithika Linturi, who had also been summoned for grilling over claims of forgery into their degree, did not honour the summonses. Detectives said Linturi refused to sign his summons.
According to the detectives, Sakaja insisted he had a degree from Uganda’s Team University, produced some of the documents needed and promised to bring others later.
He claims to have graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management (External) from Team University and presented certificates purportedly from that university.
The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai had on Saturday directed the DCI to conduct speedy investigations into such authenticity and genuineness of all the certificates, testimonials and respective documentation presented to the IEBC for clearance.
The probe, also referred to as questioned document investigation, seeks to ascertain the authenticity, or lack thereof, of the certificates and all documents that had been presented by the senator.
