Speaking after he was cleared for the race by IEBC at the Thika Pastoral centre, Gakuyo expressed confidence in garnering 90 per cent of the more than160,000 votes in the August 9 elections.

He will now be facing his arch-rival, former area MP Alice Ng'ang'a of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and 15 other aspirants in a crowded race.

Gakuyo and Ms Ng'ang'a are seeking to replace the incumbent MP Patrick Wainaina 'Wa-Jungle' who has thrown his hat in the ring for the governor race as an independent candidate.

"We are now on the path to winning the seat come August 9th and I promise to deliver the Thika seat to Azimio," said Gakuyo while promising to conduct peaceful and mature campaigns and appealing to his opponents to follow suit.

In Gatundu South, independent candidate Peter Kung'u Kibathi who was among those cleared by the local IEBC office expressed confidence in capturing the seat currently held by Moses Kuria who is now eyeing the Kiambu governorship.

Kibathi used the occasion to appeal to his opponents to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid maligning others and also asked voters to consider a candidate's abilities and not his or her election vehicle.

"People should not be fooled that it is political parties that will solve their problems, but what matters is one's leadership qualities," he said.

Also cleared for the Gatundu South seat were Kiambu Deputy Governor Joyce Ngugi (Jubilee) and Isaac Gitangu of The New Democrats (TND).

However, the contesters expressed concern over the slow pace of clearance which they said was time-consuming and tedious as IEBC officials perused through bulky documents.
