IEBC won’t extend deadline for Sonko replacement, Wiper told
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not extend the 72-hour deadline it gave Wiper Party to replace former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko as its nominee for the Mombasa governor seat.
It gave the party the ultimatum after its disputes tribunal blocked Sonko from seeking the governorship seat.
Yesterday, IEBC vice-chairperson Juliana Cherara, speaking in Mombasa, said the commission would not extend the deadline beyond the 72 hours, which lapsed yesterday, it had granted the Kalonzo Musyoka-led party. “We will follow the law ... but if he has gone to the High Court (to appeal), we will heed the court’s decision,” said Cherera.
The IEBC Disputes Resolution Committee upheld the decision of the Mombasa returning officer Sala Yusuf disqualifying Sonko on grounds that he had been impeached in Nairobi.
The court also said Sonko did not produce an original degree certificate from Kenya Methodist University and, when he did, it was past the set deadline. Mombasa Wiper coordinator Twaha Omar confirmed they would explore all available options, including nominating another candidate.
