The High Court has cleared former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko to vie for the Mombasa governor's seat under the Wiper Democratic Party ticket.

The bench comprising of Mombasa resident judge Olga Sewe, Stephen Githinji , and Anne Onginjo retreated on Wednesday, July 6 following the filing and hearing of submissions by parties in the matter.

IEBC vs Sonko

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had barred Sonko from vying on grounds that he is ineligible to hold elective office following his impeachment as Nairobi governor in 2020.

Those who had been cleared to vie for the seat include Bollo Hezron Awiti (Vibrant Democratic Party), Hassan Omar (UDA), Jama Amin Ali (PAA), Mwaruwa Abdalla Hemed (Independent), Nzaro Salim Omar (UPIA), Nassir Abdullswamad Sheriff (ODM) and Omari Said Abdalla (Usawa Kwa Wote Party).
