Vihiga United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Senate candidate Jackson Swadi has refused to drop out of the race in favour of Enos Butiko of Amani National Congress.

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has been demanding the withdrawal of candidates allied to Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA in his Western Kenya backyard.

Jackline Mwenesi, who was seeking the Woman Rep seat on a UDA ticket, at the weekend stepped down in favour of incumbent Beatrice Adagala of ANC.

Swadi (pictured), who claims to be the front runner in the race, has instead challenged ANC, in the spirit of Kenya Kwanza Alliance, to ask Butiko to step down for him.

Weak candidates

He said Musalia’s party should reciprocate the move by Mwenesi to step down for Adagala.

“I am the strongest and more experienced candidate compared to Butiko. What ANC should do is to reciprocate by asking Butiko to step down for me the way Mwenesi of UDA stepped down for Beatrice Adagala of ANC for Vihiga County Woman Rep seat,” said.

Swadi accused Mudavadi of fronting weak candidates.

“Mudavadi should play smart by fronting strong candidates like me, Adagala and Alfred Agoi if he wants to win top seats in the county. His fight to have only ANC candidates in Vihiga is likely to cost him and Kenya Kwanza badly,” he said.

Swadi’s sentiments were supported by Mwenesi who said Kenya Kwanza risked losing many seats to Azimio opponents if they do not play smart.

Mwenesi cautioned ANC, UDA and Ford-Kenya against internal rivalry, saying the fights will give their rivals an upper hand.
