The puzzle about who will become Deputy President William Ruto's running mate in the forthcoming elections now seems to be coming to an end.

This is after nominated Senator Millicent Omanga hinted that the DP could settle on Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru as his deputy in the presidential race.

In a social media post, Omanga shared a photo of Waiguru and Ruto at a past event with a caption noting that the United Democratic Alliance will break a record in the coming election by becoming the first political party to opt for a female running mate.

"We're breaking the glass ceiling in this election. The first female deputy president loading," Omanga captioned the photo.

Omanga's statement comes at a time when names of various individuals, more so from the Mt Kenya region, have been proposed for Ruto's running mate position.

Some of those individuals that have been lined up as Ruto's possible running mate include MPs Rigathi Gachagua (Mathira), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), and Alice Wahome (Kandara), National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and Tharaka Nithi Senator Kindiki Kithure among others.

The possibility of Waiguru becoming Ruto's running mate comes barely two years after the DP himself had also opened up on the possibility of having a woman as his running mate.

In 2020, Ruto said that he would prefer to have a woman as a deputy to ensure that the two-third gender rule that is yet to be implemented is put into effect.

He said that move would allow women to get equal opportunities in the government and address numerous problems facing women and the youths in the country.

“It is high time women were given equal opportunity in politics and development of the nation. The two-thirds gender rule should be given priority in any discussion involving the Constitution. That is why I am ready to have a woman as my deputy,” Ruto said.
