Business tycoon Naushad Merali, founder of Kencell and Sameer Group is dead

Businessman Naushad Merali, who is the founder of Kencell (now Airtel) and Sameer Group has died in Nairobi, his family has confirmed.

In a funeral and burial announcement seen by People Daily Digital, the Kenyan industrialist who purchased 60% ownership of Airtel Kenya business in 2004, died on July 3, 2021 at the age of 70. He will be buried on the same day in line with Muslims’ customs.

‘“It is with profound grief and sorrow that we inform you of the sad demise of Dr. Naushad Noorali Merali in Nairobi.

“The deceased was the husband to Zarin Bai Merali and father to Br. Sameer Merali, Sis. Yasmin Merali, son of Noorali Merali (“Bapa”) and brother to Marhum Mohamed Merali, Fatma Bai Nasser, Gully Bai Datoo, Marhum Bashir Merali, Shabbir Bhai Merali and Parin Bai Moloo,” the statement read in part.

It added; “It is the family’s request that Covid protocols be adhered to firmly hence, only immediate members of the family and those assisting with the burial proceedings to attend. The family thanks you for honouring this request.”

The family’s communique also explained that details of a memorial service for the wider community and friends will be circulated in due course.
