Brace yourself for hard times, analysts say

Increased cost of fuel and food hiked inflation rate to 6.27 per cent in February 2020 – the highest rate ever registered in the recent past since May 2018.

According to the Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by (2.61%), transport (0.12%), clothing and housing (0.47%).

Other items such as water and electricity, education, gas and other fuel also increased sharply thereby causing inflation also to rise by 0.47 per cent and 0.32 per cent respectively.

Robert Nderitu, Ag. Director-General said the exercise was conducted during the second and third weeks of the month, with prices being obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones in Nairobi and in 13 other urban centers.

Nderitu said the CPI increased by 1.38 per cent from 205.40 in January 2020 to 208.24 in February 2020. The overall year on year inflation, in February 2020 stood at 6.37 per cent.
