Norfolk Hotel rescinds sacking decision
DISPUTE: Norfolk Hotel has withdrawn an earlier memo sending all employees on indefinite unpaid leave as it continues engaging stakeholders to find an agreeable way forward.
The withdrawal comes after the government and staff union protested the decision to sack workers, saying it breached an earlier agreement where employees were to receive half pay for the months of April and May.
Withdrawing the May 27 memo, Norfolk Country Manager, Mehdi Morad, said the decision was reached after a meeting with Workers Committee Management and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions and Hospital Workers (KUDHEIHA) held on June 3.
“We would like to reiterate that the owners, Fairmont Hotels and resorts and subsequently Accor Hotels are very committed towards the health, safety and wellbeing of the employees.
To this end, the management has withdrawn the said memo as we continue with consultative meetings with all stakeholders until an agreement is reached,” said Morad in a statement dated June 4. – Lewis Njoka
