With the festive season already here and learning institutions having taken a short break for Christmas, children are bound to be spending most of their time indoors playing.

For many, the holidays are an opportunity for families to bond while enjoying each other’s company over a series of enjoyable meals as well as fun and games.

Note that irrespective of the number of people who will gather together to celebrate the festivities, these surfaces will be a magnet for attraction of dirt and stains.

However, this is unavoidable due to so many activities taking place and more occupants, who cause wall and floor surface abrasions.

As these are high traffic areas, there is need for regular cleaning to remove food smudges and oil stains from children and adults brushing against them.

Washing stains off painted surfaces more often than not proves challenging, with many debating whether to repaint the surface because of the abrasion that occurs when washing the dirt off.  If a painted surface is washed regularly, it is bound to peel off.

Moreover, when emulsion paints are exposed to high level of abrasion during cleaning, more often than not they tend to lose the smooth silky finish that makes them appealing.

It is not uncommon for homeowners to shy away from repainting a surface due to high expenses involved, hence the reason many will resort to the minimal painting of these walls in a bid to avoid the development of stains that thrive in such environments as a result of algae and mildew.

Mildew stains are often an unsightly appearance to the surfaces apart from being detrimental to one’s health. Therefore, in order to avert mildew growth on surfaces,  ensure proper ventilation of rooms.

This is because mould spores are naturally present in the air and as such need to be removed through external heat or exposure to sunlight.

Construction experts, therefore, recommend that wall crevices are fixed as soon as they occur since the cracks have a higher likelihood of absorbing water faster, hence attracting mildew.

Finding a paint that is easily washable, durable and mould resistant is often a challenge for many contractors and homeowners.

However, there are anti-bacterial paints in the market, such as Vinyl Silk emulsion, that are durable and easily washable without experiencing regular peeling. — Kamlesh Shah is Managing Director, Basco Paints
