Official: Mombasa county’s Sh200b housing plan on course
PROJECT: Mombasa County Government has reiterated that plans to redevelop the old estates under the Sh200 billion housing project are still intact and that ground breaking for the project is set for early next year.
Lands, housing and physical planning Chief Officer June Mwajuma said yesterday the county intends to begin ground breaking in Likoni flats by February 2020.
“We have made great strides as far as urban regeneration is concerned. We are hoping to break ground for phase one of the project hopefully February 2020 in Likoni flats where we target to put up units to accommodate at least 10,000 residents,” she said.
The project, she added, will start in Likoni, then Mzizima, Changamwe and Buxton estates. She was speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholders, meeting on development regulations for Mombasa County Housing policy, at the Kenya School of Government.
This is, however, not the first time Mombasa County has announced the ground breaking for the much-anticipated project since the unveiling of an ambitious 20-year Integrated Strategic Urban Development Plan- Mombasa Vision (MV) 2035, in 2016 which promised an elaborate turnaround in the physical planning of the port city.
Redevelopment of the old estates is contained in the MV 2035 master plan under the housing component.
