Startups that bank on motorbikes for delivery such as Glovo, Kune foods and others are currently experiencing difficulties in meeting customer orders as government crackdown on boda bodas bites.

In a statement to its customers, Kune Foods said it was having delays due to the ongoing crackdown on boda bodas. “We are experiencing delays in our deliveries due to the current boda boda situation, kindly bear with us,” it said. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday ordered a  crackdown on all boda boda operators in Nairobi and across the country, saying all operators will be registered afresh.

Without clear reasons

Police have so far arrested over 200 riders in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) as a crackdown on the sector intensifies following the sexual assault of female motorists along Wangari Maathai road. The government crackdown has seen police impound boda boda riders demanding all kinds of licences with some complaining of being arrested without clear reasons.

On the other side Spanish based delivery platform Glovo was asking customers to book again after some minutes due to high demand. “Due to high demand,we are not taking any new orders, please try again after a few minutes,” said Glovo. Boda boda riders came under spotlight on the eve of the international women’s day when some of them attacked a motorist along Forest Road and harassed and attempted to strip her naked.

Major startups that rely on boda bodas include Uber eats, Sendy, Glovo, Safe boda and Kune.
