TOURISM: The significant decrease in coronavirus pandemic cases and the gradual opening of tourist hotels post-lockdown has brought a ray of hope for the hospitality industry in the country.

Although very low on occupancy currently, hoteliers are optimistic that the domestic market and other segments will gradually pave the way for business.

Kenya Coast Tourism Association Chairman Victor Shitakha said tourist hotels are registering on average 12 per cent booking during week days and between 60 and 70 per cent weekend bookings for domestic tourists.

The hotelier said majority of the establishments are now dependent on local tourists, especially after the resumption of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and flights.

“We are currently depending more on domestic tourists and also we are grateful to travel modes like the SGR and Flight 540 because the rates are friendly enough for the travellers,” said Shitakha.

International tourist’s numbers are yet to pick up as many countries are yet to ease lockdown regulation due to Covid-19.

Industry’s recovery

Hasnain Noorani, Kenya Coast Hoteliers working group chair said Kenya’s domestic tourism market is strong and that is a key factor in the industry’s recovery.

“Outbound travel will be minimal and discretionary, and travellers will prefer places easily accessible.

So, overall, domestic business driven by the leisure segment, followed by events will recover faster than any other segment.,” he added.

Noorani, said the newly acquired Pride Inn Azure in Westlands, Nairobi hopes for an improved business this month.
