The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has told the National Assembly that it spent Ksh1,000 to register a new voter.

IEBC's Secretary Murjan Hussein Murjan to the National Assembly's Budget and Appropriation Committee (BAC) that the Commission spent the said amount during the extension period that the High Court ordered after the lapse of the mass voter registration exercise.

Murjan said that the Commission spent Ksh72 million during the extension period which it listed less than 100,000 voters.

"We didn't realise the significant figures after the court forced us to extend the mass listing for another three days. We spent Ksh72 million, about Ksh1000 per voter," Murjan told the committee.

The High Court ordered an extension of the voter registration to give those who had not registered during the 30-days period that was allocated by the IEBC to exercise their civic duty. This is after a voter moved to the court seeking the extension of the exercise.

At the time, the Commission had declined to extend the registration exercise urging that it did not have enough money to carry out the exercise.

The IEBC had requested the government Ksh4 billion to carry out the exercise but it was only given Ksh1.2 billion, leaving it with a very tight.
