Kenyans to dig deeper into their pockets as milk prices go up
Kenyans will have to dig deeper into their pockets in order to afford breakfast following an increase in the price of milk.
The announcement comes barely a week after prices of fuel was increased, leading to a public outcry.
It has been established that the processors of milk had already increased the prices despite the fact that the country is facing an economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kenya Cooperative Creameries boss Nixon Sigey said that for the last one year, despite processors increasing the prices of milk, they had to stand by consumers and ensure that they buy milk at the normal prices.
This is despite the fact that it had also become very expensive to produce milk in the country.
“Despite the price paid to the farmers increasing more than a year ago, the cost that consumers were paying was never increased,” Sigey said.
Sigey further added that farmers increased the prices by more than 12 shillings, but the consumer price has been the same all through.”
In the new changes, the prices of milk will increase by between Ksh3 and Ksh5 depending on the brand.
On Monday, September 26, packets of milk were missing in supermarkets and shops, with Kenyans raising concern about it.
Vincent Oluoch a resident in Mwihoko said that he spent the better part of Monday morning moving from shop to shop in search of a packet of milk.
“In the morning I spent more than 40 minutes from shop to shop seeking the precious commodity in vain. However, shopkeepers told me that distributors had informed them that there was a shortage because the prices were about to go up,” he said.
