Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has endorsed sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed for the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Director-General position.

In a statement, Chambers president Richard Ngatia said that Dr Amina candidature provides an opportunity for adherence to global good governance and transparency in trade liberalization and multilateral negotiations, sets out strategic priorities, activities and measures to be undertaken within the global trading ecosystem that will further enhance WTO political-security, economic, and socio-cultural cooperation.

“On behalf of KNCCI membership, the 47 devolved county chapters, partners and stakeholders would like to take this opportunity to endorse the candidature of Dr Amina Mohamed for the position of the Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO) and call for her support by other African countries,” said Ngatia.

According to him, Dr. Amina presents a rich background and engagement with the international community and her success in the position will be a great opportunity for the EAC bloc and Africa towards championing global economic policy to increase the continent’s share in global trade.

“Dr Amina was the first woman to chair the WTO's General Council and was able to negotiate for Kenya to host the WTO general Conference held in Nairobi in 2015.We believe that Amina joining the WTO will be timely as Africa is keenly focusing on the African Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

He added that Kenya is a strong proponent of the multilateral trading system and KNCCI as a business supporting institution, through their economic diplomacy they support internationalization of the local economy through trading opportunities.

“As an institution, we affirm our commitment to WTO in creating opportunities for businesses through structured trade agreements on a global scale and providing room for negotiation, disputes management and ensuring trade compliance.”
