Mombasa’s Dongo Kundu project close to full completion

INVESTMENT: The much-anticipated Mombasa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) development project at Dongu Kundu is finally becoming a reality following the submission of final specifications late last month.

A three-day intensive meeting between Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) technical committee and Nippon Koei Engineering consultants at a North Coast hotel finalised a raft of documents detailing the look and feel of the multi-billion port sub-project, the Business Hub has learnt.

Nippon Koei Engineering consultants team leader Hiroyuki Takakaze confirmed that the project detailed designs which include: “Preparations of the draft bidding documents and costs estimates will be released at the end of the month.” Bernard Osero, KPA Head of corporate affairs said the above will be followed by the crucial stage of bidding for contractors selection stage in July, a process that is estimated to go on for one year.

“The actual civil and building works for the Port sub-project will take 38 months to complete holding all factors constant,” said Takakaze who is also the Deputy General Manager, Port and Airport division at the consulting operations headquarters in Japan.

Stacking capacity

He said the works entail the development of a multi-purpose berth of 300 metres quay length, a trestle of 450 metres in length and minus 15 metres depth container and a vehicle yard with an annual stacking capacity of up to 1,830 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

According to Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia  Sh24 billion, Mwache Bridge which is part of package two of the Miritini-Kibundani road is currently 56 per cent complete.

The bridge project which starts from Mwache all the way to the Mteza area stretching a total of about nine kilometres is a major link to the upcoming special economic zone.
