Mumias workers demand to know their fate
Mumias Sugar Company Workers have demanded to know their fate ahead of a court ruling as Sarrai Group Management officials continue conducting business at the factory.
The workers said despite the court orders suspending the takeover, Sarai Group, has been in the facility since December removing heavy machinery from the stalled State miller.
On Tuesday, High Court judge Wilfrida Okwany extended orders barring the Ugandan company, Sarrai Group, from taking over operations of Mumias Sugar Company pending the determination of the petition filed by six companies challenging its bid.
Justice Okwany in a ruling dismissing an application to lift the orders stopping Sarrai Group Ltd from beginning to revive the debt-ridden Mumias, said the case by shareholderscum-farmers was urgent “and worthy of the orders to protect the subject matter”.
This was the third time Sarrai Group was being dealt a blow after the High court stopped it from taking over Mumias. On January 14, Nairobi High Court said the case required halting of activities and actions that have been complained to enable Sarrai and other respondents to file their responses.
