The number of Kenyans consuming pasta has increased going by a surge in deliveries in the last one year, this is according to data from Glovo, a multi-category app.

The data establishes Kenya as the country with the second-highest growth globally, in terms of pasta orders in the app.

Pasta which is a dish originally from Italy, consists of dough made from wheat, extruded or stamped into various shapes cooked in boiling water, and typically served with a sauce.

The firm says that the increase in the delivery of pasta means that Kenyans are exhibiting a strong affection for pasta. On average, five units of pasta are delivered through the Glovo app every hour, accompanied by a substantial 57.8 per cent year-on-year increase in customers placing pasta orders.

An analysis of the hourly distribution of pasta consumption reveals that Kenyans prefer pasta for dinner, with 32 per cent of daily consumption occurring between 5-7 pm.

The rise in pasta-related Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) on the Glovo app further underscores the platform’s role as an enabler for local economic growth.

In the past year, the app also witnessed 72.3 per cent increase in the number of firms offering pasta-related products compared to the previous year, particularly showcasing a significant 101 per cent growth in SMEs.

“At Glovo, we are committed to supporting local businesses and restaurants, providing our customers with convenient access to their favorite dishes, including the iconic pasta,” said Ivy Maingi, Interim General Manager at Glovo Kenya.

Nairobi leads the way, accounting for 87 per cent of total pasta consumption (units) delivered through Glovo, followed by Mombasa at 5 per cent and Ngong-Rongai-Karen at 4 per cent. Syokimau experienced a 928 per cent increase in pasta consumption, followed by Kisumu with a 262 per cent increase and Thika with a 203% increase, signifying the growing popularity of pasta in these areas.

Globally, Kenya ranks second for being among the biggest fans of ‘Pasta containing chicken’ and ‘Pasta containing meat.’
