The tons of cargo hauled on Kenya's modern train rose 24 percent in the first nine months to September as businesses increased amid reopening of the country's economy, Kenya Railways Corporation said in a report released on Tuesday.

The standard gauge railway train hauled 3.86 million tons of cargo during the period, up from 3.12 million tons in the first three quarters of 2020, according to the corporation.

The rise in cargo volumes saw a jump in revenue generated during the nine months to 9.98 billion Kenyan shillings (about 89 million U.S. dollars), up from 80 million dollars generated from January to September in 2020, the corporation said.

Similarly, the number of passengers using the train reached 1.37 million during the recording period, up from 422,471 in the same period in 2020.
