Two more vessels to dock at Lamu port as facility attracts more business

Kenya Ports Authority KPA has confirmed that two more cargo vessels from overseas are set to dock at the giant Lamu Port next week as more shipping lines continue to show interest in the transhipment facility.

Captain Geoffrey Namadowa, KPA senior Marine Pilot confirmed that the first ship, namely CMA CGM, is on its way from Reunion to port with cargo.

The second ship known as  (AMU 1) currently in Zanzibar is also sailing towards the port.

“Many shipping companies have shown interest in using the port, but they were awaiting us to install key infrastructural equipment, which we have now done and ready to roll,” he said.

The cargo once deployed will be transhipped to the Far East with more than 50 containers being offloaded and transhipped.

“We have over 50 containers that will be  offloaded here next week. This is to signify that established shipping companies are interested with our operations at the port of Lamu,” said Namadowa.

Cargo clearance

He confirmed that since the first berth was commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta more equipment have been installed to facilitate cargo clearance at the Lamu port including RTGs cranes.

Speaking at the facility yesterday, Government spokesman Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna  asked Lamu residents to reposition themselves to tap into the investment opportunities.

“The government is making huge investments here in Lamu to spur the economy and what is important is to ensure residents feel they are part of the beneficiaries,any investment comes with it’s own benefits,” he said.
