President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Alfred Mshimba and Monica Wanjiru Muiru to sit in the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The names were yesterday forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration.

If successful, the two will replace former commissioners Dabar Abdi Maalim and Rose Mghoi Macharia who resigned last month.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) had shortlisted 21 candidates.

The National Assembly will be expected to scrutinise the names in the coming days.

Speaker Justin Muturi yesterday committed the names to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to conduct approval hearings.

“Conscious of the importance of the EACC’s mandate in ensuring integrity in the public sector, the President has requested the National Assembly to consider the nominees as a matter of priority,” Muturi said in his communication to the House.

The National Assembly will, within 21 days of the day it next sits after receipt of the name of an applicant vet and consider the applicant, and may approve or reject applicants for any or all vacancies in the commission.

The President shall appoint the nominee, within seven days of receipt of the name of the approved applicant from the National Assembly.

Maalim and Mghoi, who left the anti-graft body early September, had a year left to the end of their six-year tenure.

Their departure was communicated via a tweet from the official State House twitter handle.

The commission said the two had resigned in line with the law that provides for exit by resignation in a way of a letter written to the President. Abdi said his resignation was a personal decision.

The two were appointed on December 17, 2015 alongside commissioners Paul Mwaniki Gachoka and Sophia Lepuchirit.

Maalim was formerly a Member of the Transition Authority and Chair of the Functional Analysis, Assignment and Costing sub-committee of the Authority.

Mghoi joined EACC from the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution, where she served as the Director in charge of the Management Services, providing strategic support to all Commission programmes.
