Brookside milk purchase hits Sh650m in North Rift
Milk production: Dairy farmers in the North Rift region earned Sh650 million selling raw milk to Brookside Dairy last year.
This represents a 5 per cent climb compared to the previous year’s earnings, attributable to better cow husbandry practices by farmers in the counties of Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.
This also underscores the important contribution of the milk value chain to the economies of rural households.
The processor resumed training of farmers after a two-year disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Brookside’s general manager for milk procurement, Mr. Emmanuel Kabaki says this will consolidate gains made by the processor in improving milk production across the country.
“We are creating a distinct opportunity for our farmers to access new on-farm technologies and ideas for better efficiencies that would further improve milk quality and earnings,” Mr. Kabaki said during this year’s agribusiness trade fair held at the University of Eldoret over the weekend.
Over 160,000 dairy farmers drawn from 300 dairy groups will benefit from the dairy training courses, with emphasis on increasing milk production for improved earnings and adherence to quality standards along the value chain.
