Manufacturers call for more action on ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ initiative

Industrialists have asked the government to facilitate production and consumption of locally produced goods, saying they have the capacity to serve both local and export markets if the right conditions are created.
They said Kenya’s over-reliance on imported goods had over the years exacerbated the country’s trade deficit, slowed down employment growth and industrialisation pace, and reduced the country’s competitiveness.
While the government has put in place measures to promote Buy Kenya Build Kenya, the manufacturers said more needs to be done to make the initiative a success.
Mucai Kunyiha, KAM chairman said it is only by consuming what is produced locally that Kenyans can support industrialisation and consequently, job creation.
“Competitiveness remains a key aspect in local, regional and international markets,” he added.
Kunyiha spoke in Nairobi during the launch of the 2021 Changamka Festival, an event organised by the Kenya Asociation of Manufacturers to showcase members’ products and drive local consumption.
Quality goods
He said the government also needs to enhance implementation of the Export Promotion and Development Strategy which seeks to help the country produce quality goods and services for export.
Speaking during the event, KAM chief executive, Phyllis Wakiaga observed that local manufacturers continue to struggle with the effects of the Covid-19 as they seek to find a balance between keeping the economy running and reducing the spread of infections.
“We genuinely appreciate the commitment of our members towards steering the country through these tough times,” she said.
