Iconic Nairobi-based Congolese singer-songwriter Darzee Kalend is embracing collaborations with the younger generation artistes in order to help the young talents grow.

Speaking with People Daily, the bandleader of the renowned lingala band Bilenge Musica du Congo, said that other established musicians, and leaders in other forms of art, should make it their responsibility to groom talents.

This, he said, would go a long way to ensure there was continuity in the broad arts sphere.

“I have taken it upon myself to help blossoming talents thrive. I intend to use my vast experience in music to help these young talents grow so that the future of this music craft can be secured,” he said.

His latest song Salma, a collaboration with the fast-rising duo Weusi Worldwide and produced by Mainswitch Production, is just one of his many musical projects lined up for his initiative.

Darzee, who describes his genre as ‘Urban Rhumba’, was born and raised in Lubumbashi (a city in the southeastern part of the DRC and the second-largest in the country) and moved to Nairobi in 1998.

He says his main aim is to inspire people through music and bringing a fresh perspective to rhumba.
