Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has demanded a detailed explanation from National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi over his presence in President William Ruto's state visit to the US.

Wandayi on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, joined President Ruto for a luncheon at the US capitol in Washington, DC.

Meeting with Ruto

He went ahead to post his photo with Ruto and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah, explaining the details of their meeting.

"In meetings with the Congressional Black Caucus led by Congressman Steven Horsford, House Leadership under Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Leadership led by Majority Leader Charles Schumer. We look forward to stronger and mutually beneficial partnership between Kenya and the USA," Wandayi said.

His presence raised questions from a section of Kenyans who demanded to know the role of the opposition in a government-sponsored trip.

Show cause letter

Alai has joined Kenyans in demanding answers from the Ugunja MP on how he got cleared to join Ruto on his trip.

The politician-cum blogger took to his official social media pages to address Wandayi in a long post.

In his address, Alai, who was elected on the ODM party ticket in the 2022 General Elections, wants Wandayi to explain how, and on what ground, the Orange party started endorsing world tours with Ruto's administration.

"Firstly, since when did ODM start endorsing world tours with UDA leadership? We must have missed the secret strategy meeting where this was approved," Alai says in his address to Wandayi.

"Could you kindly illuminate us on the strategic benefits ODM is expected to gain from your diplomatic dalliances? Are you negotiating for a way out of the Finance Bill 2024 or borrowing skills on mismanagement?"

Alai further sought to know the ODM leadership that authorized Wandayi to join Ruto in the US.

"Secondly, we are extremely curious about the authorization you received to gallivant around the globe with UDA and its apologists. Could you please share the specific letter of permission?" Alai posed.

"While UDA is being blamed for mismanaging the economy, overtaxing Kenyans, and turning us into a client state of the IMF and World Bank, you seem to be quite comfortable palling around with them."

Raila's clarification

Alai's letter to Wandayi comes moments after Raila issued a clarification on why a section of Azimio leaders was in the US with Ruto.

Raila, in a statement on Thursday, May 23, 2024, explained that some of the leaders drawn from Azimio who have been spotted in Ruto's delegation were invited by the US government.

Raila further noted that the Azimio leaders received the coalition party's permission before joining Ruto on his trip.

In his statement, Raila pointed out that members of the opposition had started raising concerns over the presence of their leaders in Ruto's US tour.
