Former Vice President Moody Awori has broken his silence on the political on-goings, calling on the Opposition to work with the government to serve Kenyans.

In a veiled criticism of the mass protests called by Opposition leader Raila Odinga to push President William Ruto out of office, Awori said time for politicking was over and called on leaders to “stop sideshows”.

Speaking when he hosted Chief Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at his Nairobi residence yesterday, Awori emphasised that it is time for the government and Opposition leaderships to work towards bettering the lives of citizens.

“We emphasised that Kenya Kwanza won the election on its manifesto and the manifesto emphasises the interest of ordinary mwanachi. I am delighted to see that is the direction. We need unity,” the former VP said in a brief press conference.

“Sideshows we want to leave them. The elections are gone. Kenya Kwanza is in place. Let it follow its manifesto. Let’s always root together. Let us always ensure the Constitution is respected and all will be well. We should continue to support the President. No matter his age, he is now our father. He is the father of the nation,” Awori, 94, said.

It was the first time Awori, popularly known as Uncle Moody during his time as the VP under president Kibaki (2003 and 2007), was speaking on the political situation.

Awori had largely maintained a deafening silence since his defeat in the 2007 Funyula parliamentary polls by Paul Otuoma (now Busia governor).

He said Kenyans need leadership that is focused on working together to find solutions to challenges facing the nation.

He at the same time called out leaders who are creating sideshows to distract the focus of the government on delivering on its agenda, saying they are enemies of progress and prosperity.

 International matters

Mudavadi said they had a candid talk on how to foster national unity and sustainable cohesion now that the country just came out of the elections six months ago. “We have discussed quite a number of things about the country and a number of international matters. I am so delighted I have gained a lot of insight from his perspective on what we should do and what we should focus on as a country moving forward.”

He emphasised on the need for leaders to be at the forefront in preaching peace and unity, as the main focus now is to re-build Kenya’s economy and ensure that every life counts.

The two also agreed that Kenya Kwanza government should focus on delivering on its campaign manifesto and promises by ensuring that no stone remains unturned in the quest to take the economy of this country back on track.

“In our talks Mzee has emphasised a lot on the need to be united and the need to remain focused on ensuring that what we campaigned for as we presented our Kenya Kwanza manifesto, that is the likes of uplifting the lives of Mama mboga, must remain to be the main focus of our operations,” Mudavadi noted.

Mudavadi said it was a great pleasure to catch-up with Mzee Awori as at his age he remains firm and stout.
