BBI is just a dream deferred, one day it will happen’- Uhuru Kenyatta
Being his last Jamhuri day celebrations in office, President Uhuru Kenyatta while addressing the guests emphasized that Kenyans will one day turn back to the now shelved Building Bridges Initiative(BBI) to help mend the cracks in our nation.
Uhuru stated that the BBI constitutional amendment is a dream that will be achieved despite the legal obstacles that it has faced.
"This I believe is what necessitated the first amendment to our constitution," Uhuru said adding that "BBI is just a dream deferred one day, someday it will happen."
Speaking of the infamous handshake of March 8, 2018, between him and Orange Democratic Movement(ODM) party leader Raila Odinga, the president noted that he did that in an effort to restore unity in the country.
"The division in our nation had cost Kenyans around Ksh 1 trillion costs incurred after Kenya held two presidential elections in 2017/2018. We had run two elections that cost the country KSh1 trillion in business losses and we were staring at a nation divided right in the middle," Uhuru said.
"Because we had disagreed respectfully, we knew that this was a mark of progress," he added.
The Head of State said that although it was a difficult decision, they did it for a greater purpose.
Unlike other ceremonies, today's 58th Jamhuri Day celebrations were held at the historic Uhuru Gardens along Langata Road.
The grounds which had been closed for several months for refurbishing was opened today to host around 11,000 guests who joined in the celebrations.
Jamhuri Day is one of the recognised public holidays by the country's constitution. The others are Madaraka (June 1) in remembrance of the day the country attained independence and Mashujaa (October 20).
