Chaos was witnessed yesterday as Azimio, Kenya Kwanza supporters clashed at the burial of former Mt Elgon MP John Serut's funeral service.

The funeral service, that was being conducted by AIC church, was interrupted for about 45 minutes before normalcy returned.

Police were forced to swing into action to separate the two camps.

Serut died two weeks ago at a Nairobi hospital after battling cancer for a while.

Mt Elgon sub-county police commander was hurt during the melee after he was hit by a stone on the head and was rushed to a local hospital for medication.

Trouble started when Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala trashed ODM leaders Raila Odinga's campaign manifesto terming Raila as an untrustworthy leader who was not capable to lead the country.

The senator also took a swipe at the area governor Wycliffe Wangamati's administration saying it had failed electorates.

"If you look keenly at the Kenya Kwanza alliance you will see its leaders who include yours truly, Wetang’ula, Didmus and the rest who will be on the ballot for various seats. But the likes of Eugene, COTU boss Francis Atwoli, Oparanya, Cyrus Jirongo and the rest like Wangamati will fail in this coming polls. They are just political brokers who want to auction our community and we shall not allow that to happen," he said.

Residents, political leaders, the clergy and family members of the late lawmaker condemned the fracas.

The fearless and no-nonsense Serut who served two terms as a member of parliament by being elected first in 2002 will be remembered for playing a key role in Mt Elgon region's politics.

His wife Serut eulogized him as a God-fearing and development-oriented leader who served residents with diligence.

"My husband is someone who is very respected and so saddened by what has happened today at his final wedding," he said. This chaos was planned yesterday night and I had the intelligence. All I am saying is that may God forgive you all who planed this," she said.

Ford Kenya party leader Wetangula also condemned the incident saying that the chaos was uncalled for.

Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi eulogized Serut as someone who played mature politics in Mt Elgon with a firm stand.

Governor Wangamati also rooted for peaceful elections.
