Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now says that President William Ruto's developing Nyanza does not equal a handshake with the opposition.

In a tweet shared via his official Twitter account, the sharp-tongued senator insinuated that the Head of State was simply discharging his mandated roles as he would in any other part of the country, regardless of the political affiliations.

He also said that the opposition will continue playing its oversight role in holding the government accountable.

"Ruto shall not leave any part of Kenya in terms of unity and development regardless of their political affiliations/voting. This does not anyway mean a handshake but the opposition shall continue playing their rightful place. Maturity in democracy!." he wrote.

Cherargei's remarks come when Ruto is in Kisumu for his two-day whirlwind tour of the Nyanza region.

The first in command has initiated several development projects aimed at elevating the region's economy and improving the living standards of residents across the region.

Among the projects include the launch of the first phase of the 5,000 affordable housing programmes in Homa Bay county and the commissioning of the newly completed Homa Bay municipal market.

Ruto later flew to Kisumu County and held a meeting with Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and other elected leaders in the lakeside county.

"We are committed to exploiting the full potential of the Kisumu Port that stands to change the economic fortunes of the East African region. At the Kisumu State Lodge, hosted the Kisumu County administration led by Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o. Discussed the development of the port," the President posted.

Before flying to the Kisumu State Lodge, the Head of State held a meeting with Migori County leaders led by Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko.

He also commissioned the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Blue Economy Research Hub and met local leaders during his visit to Siaya on Saturday, January 14, 2023.

During his visit to the region which is considered the backyard of opposition leader Raila Odinga, Ruto was accompanied by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua among other leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza alliance.

He pledged that his administration will ensure that all counties progress economically regardless of their political affiliations and how they voted during the August 9, 2022, election.
