Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party has confirmed that it will hold its planned demonstrations on Thursday and Friday this week.

In a statement, Azimio co-principal and Narck Kenya party leader Martha Karua said that day one of the third wave of demonstrations across the country was "extremely successful".

"We salute the gallant Kenyan patriots who braved police teargas, water canons and bullets by turning up in their numbers to express their sovereign will. Once again, the people have spoken loudly and clearly by denouncing the punitive taxes imposed on them by the illegitimate Kenya Kwanza regime through the ill-fated Finance Act 2023. In one accord, the people have declared that if the regime cannot listen to them, they will liberate and fend for themselves," Karua stated.

Karua said that the opposition would press on with the demonstrations on Thursday, July 20, 2023, across the country.

In Nairobi, Karua said that the opposition would have three venues where the people shall assemble, including Hururna Grounds, Kangemi Grounds and Central Park.

"We wish to appeal to the liberators this evening that it is now time for them to retreat to their homes, refresh and recharge in readiness for renewed action tomorrow, Thursday 20th July 2023 - day two of the 3rd wave maandamano," Karua added.

"We call upon Kenyans to come out in an even bigger way tomorrow and demonstrate peacefully in their neighbourhoods. For those who were unable, for one reason or another, to participate today, you have a chance tomorrow and the day after. We expect the Police to provide security to the demonstrators and the general public."

Azimio faults police

Karua however accused the police of brutalising protestors to the extent of killing some.

"Unfortunately, and characteristically, the police have today inflicted terrible harm on peaceful and unarmed demonstrators. We empathise with those whose loved ones have lost lives in the hands of rogue elements in the Police Service We also with those who suffered injuries and are lying in various hospitals across the country, quick recovery," she added.

The opposition has called for protests across the country to demonstrate against the high cost of living, reconstitution of the electoral commission and the raid of opposition parties by the government among other issues.
