Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua addressed concerns that members of the Kikuyu ethnic community form the majority in government.

Speaking on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Njambini in Nyandarua county during the burial of the late Mukami Kimathi, Gachagua sarcastically asked where Kikuyus should be if not in government.

The DP further stated that no one was making noise about Kikuyus forming the majority of inmates in Kamiti Prison.

"Nimeona magazeti watu wakipiga kelele ati umeweka Wakikuyu wengi kwa serikali yako. Walikua wanataka tuende wapi? Sasa mimi nauliza tukiwa wengi kwa serikali ya Ruto iko makosa? Wale wanasema tuko wengi kwa serikali ya Ruto sisi pia ndo tuko wengi Kamiti Prison. Kwa nini wasemi tufunguliwe tuende nyumbani?" Gachagua said.

He added; "Your Excellency, we are in your government by choice and by arrangement. We made a conscious decision to vote for you because you have what it takes to run this country. And it cannot be ati yakwamba ati Wakikuyu hapa wachache wakiwekwa kwa serikali munasema ati ni ukabila. Sisi tumefungwa tumejaa pale Kamiti hakuna mtu analalamika ati Wakikuyu ni wengi wafunguliwe waende nyumbani."

Gachagua further asked President William Ruto to employ more Kikuyus in his government, stressing that they overwhelmingly voted for him in the August 9, 2022, presidential election.

"Your execellency wale umeweka kwa serikali yetu tunashukuru endelea kuweka wengine. Na sisi kura yetu ni mingi pia, si tulipigia huyu rais William Ruto? Yes. Nyinyi kama hamukupigia yeye it's up to you sisi musituhusishe kwa mambo yenu, sisi tulimpigia akituangalia pia si ni wachapa kazi," he said.

Gachagua added that there was nothing wrong with Ruto dishing out government jobs to Kikuyus who can help him govern the country.

"He [Ruto] has analysed and found that in this region there are men and women who can assist him to govern and we are in that government by choice. And the President has done nothing wrong in asking us to come and help him to run the government. Kwa hivyo watu wawachane na sisi, sisi tulipiga kura tukaamka mapema tukijua ni nini tunafanya," Gachagua said.
