Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims he asked President William Ruto not to assign him international trips, which are now largely handled by Chief Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Speaking on Sunday, Gachagua says he asked the President to leave him to handle internal affairs especially fighting alcoholism and drug abuse.

“I have heard people saying that Musalia is doing my job. That he is the one going to Nigeria while I have been handed the ordinary jobs of fighting alcohol and drug abuse. I told the president to leave me here in Kenya to fight alcoholism and drug abuse,” Gachagua said.

According to Gachagua, any trip outside the country must be about resource mobilisation and not just attending ceremonies.

"Ile safari mimi ntaenda ni ile ya kutafuta kitu. Kwenda tuu kuona rais mpya akiapishwa mimi ntarudi na nini? Mimi sina haja. (The only trip I'll attend should be about resource mobilisation. If I go to see a new President being sworn in what do I bring back? I do not need it.) ,"  he said.

In recent times, Mudavadi has been assigned to represent President Ruto in a number of events outside the country, floating speculations that the President is out of favour for his Deputy.

Mudavadi has recently represented Ruto in Burundi, Angola Nigeria and lately at the inauguration of Nigeria’s new President Bola Tinubu.

In December 2022, Ruto represented Ruto at the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit in London.
