Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims that Mt Kenya leaders who supported opposition leader Raila Odinga during August 9, 2022, election were conmen.

Speaking in Siaya on Saturday, January 14, 2023, the country's second-in-command said that he had cautioned Siaya Governor James Orengo that the aforementioned leaders were only lying to him for their own selfish interests not to deliver votes as they claimed.

"Ile watu wa mlima Kenya wote ambao wame surround baba ni conmen, watakula pesa yake yote na kumdanganya na hakuna kitu atapata, huyu Orengo nilimwambia," he said.

This loosely translates to:

"I told Orengo that all those Mt Kenya leaders around Raila were conmen. I knew they would lie to him and squander his money yet there was nothing he would get out of it,"

He stated that it was wrong for Mt Kenya leaders to string Raila along knowing clearly they would not deliver the expected votes for him to win.

"Ni makosa kubwa sana kuketisha mzee kama huyo chini na kumwahidi kura mnajua hakuna, it is wrong, na wale wote walidanganya huyo mzee ati wamemwekea kura, hawatapata amani katika maisha yao. It is wrong, na hio siasa ya udanganyifu tunataka ifike mwisho,"

This loosely translates to:

"It was wrong to promise the old man that he would get votes when there were none; All those who lied to the old man that they would give him votes will never know peace in their lives. It is wrong and we want to do away with deceptive politics, " Gachagua stated.

Gachagua and his boss President William Ruto were in Siaya county to conclude their 2-day tour of the Luo Nyanza region.

The tour followed a day after the two visited Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.

"We are committed to exploiting the full potential of the Kisumu Port that stands to change the economic fortunes of the East African region. At the Kisumu State Lodge, hosted the Kisumu County administration led by Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o. Discussed the development of the port," the President posted.
