Deputy President William Ruto’s cronies have castigated governors who declared their support for Orange party leader Raila Odinga’s presidential quest.

Led by United Democratic Alliance chairman Johnson Muthama (pictured), the politicians said majority of the governors who endorsed Raila’s presidency are serving their last terms and are looking for relevance.

According to Muthama, others who backed Raila are facing criminal and fraud related cases and are, therefore trying to avoid prosecution and conviction.

“The choice of a few greedy governors should not be confused with that of Kenyans,” said Muthama. Garissa Township MP Aden Duale said the Naivasha meeting was a convention of governors with integrity issues hanging on their necks.

“The meeting in Naivasha was between Raila and his clients. Having been “washed clean” by the launderette, they now think they can dupe Kenyans that they can decide who will lead the country so that they can protect their loot,” Duale said.

However, former Education Permanent Secretary Prof James Ole Kiyiapi disagreed, saying the governors’ support for Raila is very signifi cant and critical in ground mobilisation.

“Kenyans have always gravitated around broad inclusive coalitions - the feeling of “we too belong” is extremely powerful,” Prof Kiyiapi said in a tweet.
