COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has on Saturday, February 26, 2022, defended his involvement in active politics despite leading a national workers' union.

Atwoli, who supports the Azimio La Umoja movement openly, has been subject to criticism for partisanship despite being at the helm of a national union that encompasses workers of varying political persuasions.

Speaking at the ODM National Delegates Conference in Kasarani, the firebrand trade unionist stated that globally, labour leaders always involve themselves in their country's politics.

"Any labour leader globally, who is worth his salt and who hails from a pressure group and has a mandate of workers, must always know who is coming to lead the nation," he said.

Atwoli further justified his support for Raila's quest for the presidency, stating that labour leaders must ensure they support political leaders who will put in place mechanisms that will spur economic growth and expand employment opportunities.

While avowing his support for Raila, the trade unionist hailed the fringe political parties that resolved to join forces with the ODM Leader under the umbrella of the Azimio La Umoja movement. Atwoli also averred that all workers are part and parcel of the Azimio La Umoja movement.
