Roots Party of Kenya presidential aspirant George Wajackoyah says he will introduce the death penalty for those found guilty of corruption.

Prof  Wajackoyah has promised to introduce stiffer penalties to curb runaway corruption in Kenya, claiming that most people charged with graft are walking around freely, with some holding influential positions in government.

“Stiffer penalties for those guilty of corruption will serve as a deterrent to others. This works perfectly in Singapore and China, where it has effectively controlled graft,” Wajackoyah said while addressing a rally in Nairobi’s Westlands.

The US-educated lawyer cited Thailand, Iran, Morocco, China, Indonesia and Vietnam as some of the countries that have introduced the death penalty in their fight against corruption and bribery.

Wajackoyah recently made headlines with his proposal to legalise bhang (marijuana) if he wins the State House race. He said corruption has retarded Kenya’s development and impoverished citizens.

He said it is not enough to arrest and prosecute individuals implicated in corruption, adding that stiffer measures should be put in place to deter the vice.

“Our society has been made to adore monied people, a perception that forces individuals in power to make money through any means to earn respect. To stop this, if I win, we shall introduce mandatory death sentence for those guilty of corruption,” he stated.

Wajackoyah also promised to introduce legislation barring people in Government and Parliament from owning media houses to save journalists from being misused and underpaid. “Most media houses are owned by a cabal of powerful individuals who have monopolised the sector,” he said.

Wajackoyah was accompanied by his party chairman, Ramesh Gorasia, and Secretary-General Adan Kadernani.

He challenged the youth to visit his party offices and fill out forms to vie for positions such as MCA, National Assembly, Woman Representative, Governor, Senator and Deputy President in the forthcoming polls.
