Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi now says Meru region has the highest number of his party's members.

He claimed this while receiving about 200 Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters and aspirants who defected to his party on Friday at a political event held at Kaaga Primary School in Imenti North.

"I'm happy that Meru has decided to back Safina party. The region has the highest number of Safina party supporters. This makes me be sure of winning the presidential election," Wanjigi said.

He at the same time called on residents to back him for the presidency saying his government will work well with the region by addressing both political and developmental interests.

The businessman who moved to Safina after a bitter fall-out with ODM further added that the party is not interested in joining coalitions ahead of the general election.

"This will be the most shocking elections Kenyans have ever witnessed. I'm not anybody's project and I'm not joining any tribal coalition because I'm in a direct coalition with the electorate," he added.

At the event, Martin Kathurima who is eyeing the Central Imenti parliamentary seat on Safina ticket said they expect the party to be more popular in the region ahead of the August 9 polls.

While drumming support for Wanjigi, Kathurima, who is in the party's youth technical team which is appointed to draw the party's manifesto, said they expect more members to join the party after the just concluded United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations which he said were marred with irregularities in the region.

'We expect more people to join Safina, especially from UDA after their nominations. Some are already engaging us after they were unfairly treated in the nominations," Kathurima said.
