Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has announced his exit from Paul Mwite's Safina Party hours after businessman Jimi Wanjigi joined the party.

Taking to his social media page, Kabando said that he decided to quit the party after consulting with his campaign team and allies. He said that his team advised him that the outfit was no longer fit for his political ambitions as per the prevailing political conditions.

Kabando is planning to vie for the Nyeri Senate seat in the coming elections.

"After consultations with #KabandoCampaign, allies, stakeholders & a review of developing political scenarios in the party vis-a-vis ideals we hold dear, we have concluded that Safina is no longer fit for #SenatorKabando bid," the ex-MP said.

Kabando's decision to quit the party comes hours after Wanjigi joined the party weeks after quitting ODM. Speaking after being given the life membership certificate Wanjigi said he chose to join Safina because it has its ideologies.

"Those who were thinking Safina is dead, let me assure them that with Muite's wisdom we shall sail through the third liberation as they'll actualize it," Wanjigi said.

He has welcomed people to join the party ahead of the NDC on March 21, 2022, where he will be unveiled as the flagbearer. So far, Wanjigi is the only person who has shown interest to vie under the Safina Party ticket.

It is not immediately clear whether it is Jimmy's presence in Safina Party that has prompted Kabando, who has previously been ODM leader Raila Odinga's staunch supporter, quit the party.

In 2021, the former lawmaker revealed that he is one of the people in Raila's presidential teams and will support his presidency even though he concurs with Deputy President William Ruto's Bottom-UP economic model.

"2016 initiated a BIPARTISAN parliamentary caucus for IEBC electoral reforms. Trolls are insulting coz I've joined Odinga's Presidential Campaign should understand that endorsing Ruto's #bottomupEconomics crusade NEVER meant approving his 2022 aspirations. Bipartisanship is on ISSUES," he said in a Tweet dated December 15 2021.

It is now not clear whether Kabondo will join ODM or any other party affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja movement. He has, however, promised to reveal his next step on Friday afternoon.

"Further details Friday 3 pm. We thank you. #NyeriFirst," he said.
