Khalwale congratulates Azimio’s Fernandes Barasa as results for Kakamega poll stream in

Kakamega Senator-elect Boni Khalwale has offered an early congratulatory message to Fernandes Barasa ahead of the official announcement of the Kakamega gubernatorial poll results.

In a post shared on social media on Tuesday, August 30, the outspoken United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party politician also recognised Barasa's main challenger Cleophas Malala for putting up a spirited fight in the hotly contested race.

"Congratulations Fernandes Barasa for your win and Cleophas Malala for your spirited fight," Khalwale wrote.

Barasa, vied for the seat on an ODM party ticket, while Malala contested on an Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket.

In provisional results seen by People Daily Digital, Barasa, who is aligned to the Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition, is leading in the Kakamega governor's race with 192,768 votes against Malala's 159,275.

Khalwale wins Kakamega Senator's race

Khalwale had expressed interest in the Kakamega governor's seat ahead of the August 9 polls but dropped out of the race in favour of Malala after interventions by Kenya Kwanza Alliance leader William Ruto. He went on to vie for the Kakamega Senate seat.

The Senator-elect garnered 247,860 votes to beat his closest challenger Brian Lishenga of the ODM party, who got 195,052 votes.
