Marsabit MPs want Chachu Ganya probed over alleged incitement remarks
Members of Parliament from Marsabit County want Directorate of Criminal Investigations and National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to interrogate North Horr MP Chachu Ganya over alleged utterances that bordered on hate and incitement against certain ethnic communities.
Addressing a press conference at Parliament Buildings, the MPs Dido Ali Raso (Saku), Wario Qalicha Gufu (Moyale) and Safia Sheikh Adan (County Women representative) characterized Chachu’s statements as 'adding petrol to an already burning fire'.
On Sunday, the North Horr legislator had alleged that Gabra community are original and dominant inhabitants of Marsabit County since colonial times and as such Saku constituency belongs to the Gabra community is a “serious incitement to violence considering the situation the ground”.
According to Raso, the remarks were meant to incite the Gabra community to get rid of Borana, whose majority occupy Saku constituency which is still mourning the murder of 13 people, who included three police officers and school going children.
“It is quite tragic and irresponsible that in an emotionally charged atmosphere of Marsabit County, a legislator who should embrace unity and peaceful co-existence incites communities against each other,” Raso said told a press conference at parliament Buildings on Tuesday.
He asked: “Are Gabras, the largest ethnic group as per recent released results of 2019 population census? Where the source is as KNBS has no such record or figures?” Raso insisted.
“We have seen the horrors that occur when words of incitement turn to acts of violence. I hope such incitements cannot go unchecked by concern authorities,” he added.
Nevertheless, the lawmakers pushed the North Horr legislator to explain to the public the source and his references that made Gabra as the largest ethnic group since the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) are yet to release any data capturing on ethnic breakdown either by county, sub county or ward level.
On his part, Qalicha noted: “We believe that the North Horr lawmaker is a good subject that can provide finer details coming on the heels of the killing of 13 persons in Kukuto and Jaldesa,” Qalicha noted.
