A section of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region has maintained that the region must produce a presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

Led by Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, Gichuki  Mugambi, Mp Othaya, and Nduati Ngugi from Gatanga, the leaders said the region has leaders who have the capacity to lead the country after the exit of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nduati said it’s high time for President Uhuru to appoint the region’s new kingpin now that he is heading to retirement.

According to the leaders, by doing so, the Mt Kenya region people will get a clear direction on who to follow.

“It will not be a good thing if the president leaves without giving us the leaders who shall represent our interests as the region,” he said.

He also downplayed the notion that the mountain is divided claiming that the narrative is being peddled by people who want to confuse voters from the region.

“The mountain is immovable and cannot be cut into pieces like a cake,” he said.

Chege on her part lamented that the Mt Kenya region has lost focus given that other regions are already bargaining for power.

She said the region has enough numbers to enable it to get a significant portion of the national cake in the next government.

Mugambi on the other hand asked the region to unite ahead of 2022 saying that is what is needed to ensure their numbers count.

“The unity of the region as we head to the election is very important because we are banking on our numbers,” he said.

He also called upon Parliament to legislate laws that will enable the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to review the constituencies’ boundaries.

“The review should be done at least one year prior to the general elections and we are running out of time,” he said.
