Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Nyandarua on Friday defied United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party position and elected Stephen Wachira Waiganjo to be Speaker.

Party secretary general, Veronica Maina had written a letter to the MCAs ordering them to uphold the party position of backing George Gaita for the Speaker’s post.

Waiganjo who is a brother of former Oljororok MP, JM Waiganjo garnered 27 votes against the UDA favoured George Gaita who got 14.

The MCAs ignored the UDA letter telling them the party had taken a stand to support Gaita.

“Kindly note that, George Gaita Maina, is the duly nominated member from our Party to be the Speaker Nyandarua County Assembly.

“This is the Party position and must be upheld,” warned the UDA Secretary General in the letter dated September 22. UDA is the majority party in the Nyandarua assembly.

But the acting clerk, Mukiri Muchiri ruled that there is precedent that set 27 votes as the two-thirds threshold for the Nyandarua County assembly. The outcome of the Speaker’s seat and that of the deputy speaker where, Zachary Njeru (Nyakio Ward) was defending the deputy speaker’s seat was beaten by new comer Samuel Chege Gathirimu of Geta Ward.
