Bungoma Members of Parliament have assured sugarcane farmers that Nzoia Sugar Company will not be privatised.

Lawmakers, led by Kanduyi MP John Makali (pictured), said the government had promised to revive the ailing factory and not sell it.

Makali, who was accompanied by Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) and Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East) declared that the company will not be sold.

Speaking at Nandiola market at the weekend, the MPs said President William Ruto had promised to revive the factory when Bungoma leaders met him at State House last Thursday.

“The Head of State has assured us of new machines and writing off the debts of the factory” said Makali.

He said during their visit, the President promised to tour the county next month and solve the Nzoia problems. Wanyonyi emphasised that the factory, the region’s only heritage, will not be disposed of.

He said their aim of meeting farmers was to assure them that the factory will be revived and their dues paid up to date.

“We have come here to assure you that our factory will not be sold but it was going to be fixed with new machines for proper efficiency,” MP noted.  Barasa said top on the agenda when the President will be touring the county was the revival of Nzoia Sugar Factory.

“President will also be delivering the new machines as he had promised during campaigns as the current ones are old and costly,” he said.

MP also assured that President Ruto will inject more funds into the miller to clear farmers’ arrears and pay workers’ delayed salaries.

Nzoia is among the government owned companies earmarked for selling.

The factory owes farmers Sh300 million that has not been paid for sugar delivered and millions of salary arrears.
