ODM issues public apology to Ruto ally after she was mishandled at Raila’s Azimio La Umoja event

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has since issued an official statement, apologizing to Maragua MP Mary Wamaua after she was manhandled at Raila Odinga's Azimio la Umoja vent on Friday, December 11.

In the statement, undersigned against the name of the party's chairman John Mbadi on Saturday, ODM said it regrets the ugly incident adding that it is committed to ensuring such an incident does not happen again.

"Although it was not majorly an ODM affair, Azimio la Umoja event, our party leader Raila Odinga was the man for the moment and used the occasion to make a major announcement about his political plans for 2022 and so as a party, we regret the ugly incident and commit to ensuring such incidents do not happen against," Mbadi said.

MP Wamaua accused security detail at the Azimio la Umoja convention of mishandling her in a video clip that has since gone viral.

In the video, the lawmaker was heard accusing the plain cloth security officers of shoving her away despite the fact that she is an elected leader.

"Na mkifika State House, itakuwa namna gani? Tunataka watu ambao wamenyenyekea. Mimi mjumbe amechaguliwa mnaniskuma kama viazi? Tutapatana kwenye debe (So how will the situation be when you get to State House? We want humble people. Why are you roughing me up yet I am an elected leader? Let's meet at the ballot)," she was heard saying.

Clearing the air and apologizing to Wamaua, ODM said it shall do everything to ensure it protects, defends and upholds the dignity of women.

"Our party leader is a strong defender of the rights of women and their empowerment and therefore, we shall do everything within our limits to protect, defend and uphold the dignity of women at all times," the official statement read in part.

Mbadi further beseeched Wamaua and her constituents asking that she forgive the party for the ill-treatment.

"On behalf of the ODM Party, I take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Hon Wamaua for the indecent handling and pray that she, together with the good people of Maragua will accept our apology," he said.
