ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has jumped to the defence of Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, after the latter became subject to online attacks following his remarks at a fundraiser in Nyamira county.

The lawmaker's sentiment, that seemingly suggested that in the event of a Raila victory, the government will be owned by people from Nyanza, did not augur well with Kenyans and politicians allied to DP Ruto.

Sifuna has however clarified that the minority whip was speaking on a light note, and that the government of the former prime minister will be all inclusive.

"He was talking in a light note, there are people who do not know jokes; I can assure you Junet Mohammed was joking. Don't listen to what someone said in a jocular manner and start getting angry. Raila Odinga's government will not belong to Nyanza people alone, it will be for the entire country," he said.

Junet was put on the spot on Saturday October 23 by Kenyans after he claimed that should former prime minister bag the presidency, power will be centred in his Nyanza backyard.

The outspoken politician also jokingly told Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who was also present at the fundraiser, that he will soon come to the region as a visitor once Raila rises to the helm of the country's leadership.

Junet added that Kagwe's people (Mt Kenya locals) have enjoyed the trappings of power for more than 20 years and it is now the turn of Nyanza residents to enjoy power should Raila assume office in 2022.

"If Raila wins the government will be owned by the people of Nyanza. I don't want this to get to the media, Mutahi Kagwe will be upset. Though even you and your people have enjoyed power for more than 20 years. This round the government is for Nyanza locals. Mutahi you will soon come back here as a visitor, " Junet said
