Taita Taveta governor Granton Samboja is way ahead in the race to retain his seat if elections were conducted today.

This is according to the latest report by pollster Mizani Africa from a survey conducted in the county between March 8 and 18, 2022.

The first-time county boss would be voted by 46.7% of the sampled population, beating his closest rival and former governor John Mruttu who has garnered 16.3 %.

Tipped as the candidate who will fly the Azimio la Umoja flag in the county, Samboja of Wiper party is enjoying huge support that must drive Mruttu who is the United Democratic Alliance’s point-man in the county back to the drawing board.

With barely four months to the elections, former Senator Dan Mwazo comes third with 14.4% as media personality Patience Nyange (Wiper) and Mwatate Member of Parliament Andrew Mwadime amass 9.1% and 8.3% respectively.

Interestingly, the Mizani poll results come just a day after Mwadime ditched the Orange Democratic Movement’s party for Communist Party of Kenya.

He was supposed to battle it out in the nominations with Rachael Mwakazi and another hopeful Thomas Mwakwida for the ODM ticket in the gubernatorial race.

Agnes Wakesho, George Mwandembo, Mwakazi and Stephen Mwakesi have each collected below 5% with Mwakesi coming last in the list, according to the pollster.

The Taita Taveta gubernatorial race has so far attracted nine contestants including Mruttu, Mwadime, Mwazo and the incumbent governor and 2022 elections favourite (according to Mizani Africa) Samboja.

Others are Nyange, Mwakazi, Mwandembo, Mwakesi and lawyer Onsemus Mwinzi.
