The United Democratic Alliance party has finally picked the replacement of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua after his nomination as Ruto's running mate.

Konyu Ward MCA Eric Wamumbi will now fly the party's flag in the Mathira parliamentary race. Wamumbi's selection comes days after the nascent party invited applications for the Mathira parliamentary ticket following Gachagua's elevation.

Speaking during UDA's rally in Nyeri county, Ruto heaped praises on Wamumbi terming him as a person who is committed to UDA.

"Wamumbi is a firm leader. He was one of the few MCAs in Nyeri County who refused bribe offers in order to endorse the BBI Bill in the County Assembly. His firmness will be of great value to the people of Mathira," Ruto said.

Speaking after his selection, Wamumbi stated that he will endeavour to continue the good work that Rigathi Gachagua had started.

UDA called for applications for Gachagua's Mathira ticket

In a press statement undersigned against the name of the party's NEB Chair Anthony Mwaura, UDA stated that the ticket was up for grabs after their nominee for the parliamentary seat, Rigathi Gachagua, was picked by Deputy President William Ruto as his running mate in the presidential contest.

"On 15th May 2022, Honourable Rigathi Gachagua the UDA Candidate for a member of National Assembly Mathira Constituency was nominated as the UDA deputy presidential candidate. As a result, he will not be contesting for the member of parliament seat Mathira constituency," the statement read in part.
