Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) allied to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have read the riot act to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The UDA MCAs are accusing Sakaja of failing to consult the party's leadership structures while making key appointments in the Nairobi county government.

They also claim that Sakaja appointed people affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance to his Cabinet, to the detriment of the UDA party.

Anthony Kiragu, UDA minority leader in Nairobi County Assembly, said the party's MCAs had given Sakaja a one-month ultimatum to publicly declare he is a member of Azimio.

“He was elected on a UDA ticket but he has never consulted anyone from the party before making appointments. We are giving him one month to come out and declare that he belongs in the Azimio coalition so that we can know the next course of action,” Kiragu was quoted by Nation.Africa as saying.

“We have given him just one month so that he can realign his appointments. Let him reach out to the party leadership and apologise over what he has done and rectify. The party mobilised voters in Nairobi who believed in him because he used the UDA flag,” UDA Minority Chief Whip Mark Ronaldo Mugambi said.

Vetting

UDA MCAs last week disrupted and walked out of the vetting session for Lighting and Energy Chief Officer nominee Lucky Ogutu Okudo.

The county lawmakers claimed that Okudo did not submit her academic documents on time and that she was also behind the chaos at Bomas of Kenya during the tallying of presidential votes.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who is a member of ODM, took over the vetting session after the walkout by UDA MCAs.

“Why did they just walk out during the vetting session? They would have just come, sat down, and raised their concerns so that they are recorded in the Hansard. All those allegations they are making against the nominee are frivolous,” Alai said after UDA boycotted the vetting.

Gachagua slam Sakaja

The sabre-rattling by Nairobi UDA MCAs came after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua publicly slammed Sakaja.

Speaking in Nyeri on December 19, 2022, Gachagua cautioned Sakaja against making any decision that would adversely matatu industry.

The DP noted that he was the one who instructed members of his community to vote for Sakaja.

He further stated that the Nairobi governor should consult him when making decisions that could negatively impact businesses.
